So, here it is......day #1 on my blog. Sometimes it seemed like this day would never get here, but then other times (like last night) the time just flew by. Did we do all we wanted?? Maybe, but the closer it got, the more distracted we became. Wade was very scattered and not sure where things were packed, if indeed he had packed them, or were they in a drawer or on a shelf somewhere? He was getting very weary of the planning, sorting and packing.
I've got this heavy-duty tub that is to be shipped to his base in Iraq. There are holes on each end to padlock the contents. We bought two of them at Wal-mart and thought we would never need to use both. But, as of last night, the first one is overflowing and I'll have to either use the other one or just ship the remainder of his supplies in a sturdy box. It's hard to plan what will be needed, used, or just stored away once it arrives. A year is hard to plan for.
So this morning, we woke up at 3:00. Actually Wade woke up earlier than that. He has a hard time sleeping and I'm sure his mind was still racing. We fixed coffee and he had some fruit. We left the house at 3:30 to get to the airbase by 4:00. Because he will be carrying a weapon (gun) with him, he is not allowed to drive in a personal owned vehicle (POV). An airman was waiting in front of his building to drive him to pick up the gun and go on to the airport. They loaded up the car and I got a wonderful bear hug from my best friend. It was hard to say good-bye (of course) but we've done this before and we know we can manage this time as well. We have faith that God will protect us and keep us safe under his wings. Wade had left his hat in my car so I had to run back up there to give it to him. That would have been distressing for me if he had left that behind. I followed their car through the base and once outside, they turned left and I turned right. I watched the tail lights in my rearview mirror until they were gone.
As I drove through Yellow Springs in the dark, I saw what I thought was a dog crossing the road. I slowed down and realized it was a herd (group?) of deer. I had no where urgent to go so I pulled over and watched as they walked around the car and took their time exploring and then crossing the road. They were fairly small and I believe were all does. Amazing that they had no fear of the car. I also saw a couple of raccoons further on running through the ditches.
Wade flew to Denver and waited for a transport vehicle to take him to Camp Guernsey in Wyoming. He met someone in the airport also going to the training and they helped watch each others luggage while they waited. Wade was very relieved to hear that internet service was good at the camp. That means that we can at least keep in some sort of contact. I haven't heard yet if he has arrived at his final destination, but he said it may not be until tomorrow before he writes back.
After a nap this morning, I spent the day at home. I did reading and Bible study for my two classes. This afternoon I picked up Jared and I did some tutoring. I heard that Jared had thought he would be able to say goodbye to Wade one more time this morning and was upset because his Grampee was already gone. We will be working on writing letters to Grampee. Tonight I had handbell rehearsal - I always enjoy playing the handbells. Very relaxing to me.
Today is also Day 1 for me on the Weight Watchers program. That went well today and I am looking forward to a bag of SmartPop Popcorn and a can of diet coke later tonight. That is good relaxation for me.
