The weather wants so bad to be spring, but winter is hanging on as hard as it can. The wind was cold today even though the sun was shining, then this afternoon while I was driving to the post office, I drove through snow flurries! Nothing stuck, it only lasted for seconds, but it was definitely snow flurries.
I have only heard briefly from Wade because his personal internet service is still down. He sends me quick little emails from his work account, but he's not able to read the blog or post anything to facebook.
I went this morning to Hannah House and did some work. I think I'll talk about Selena - the director of Hannah House. She is truly an amazing woman and I am amazed at her hard work and dedication to Hannah House. She founded Hannah House about 10 years ago to help homeless mothers get back on their feet and back into the mainstream of life. She herself had been a single mother a long time ago and so she can empathize with some of these women that come to live in the Hannah House.
It is not just a place to live, but an introduction to a new way of life that incorporates a relationship with Jesus which is an integral part of the healing and growing process. Each woman that lives there is required to attend church on Sunday. Selena's husband is the pastor of the church next door and the women may attend that church or chose one of their own. In addition to the women participating in professional counseling, Selena holds workshops and Bible studies during the week. Once a week they have a group meeting and all residents, past and present, are invited and encouraged to attend. I joined them once last month for a pizza lunch and devotional. Selena has a real passion to share the love of Jesus with these women as well as educate them on the Bible. I am impressed with the hunger for God's truth that these women have.
Selena is there or is available on call every day and every night. Just last night she was with one of the women at the Emergency Room until the early hours of the morning. She is a substitute mother to each woman and has arms that are ready to hug each child in the house.
Last week when I was feeling some struggles she pulled out a black gospel cd and played that for me. She also tried to show me how to do a particular dance like they do in her church, but she couldn't get her feet to move right. We just laughed about that.
I chose to come help out at Hannah House last June and felt a connection with Selena and the Hannah House. Now I take care of the finances, pay the bills, write the checks, and serve on the Board of Directors as the Treasurer and Recorder. I've met quite a few of the women. I've seen them come and go, but I believe that their lives are richer after leaving the Hannah House and knowing that God's love is with them no matter what. That is all thanks to Selena and her servant heart.
